Compound UnitePrivacy Policy
Compound Unite helps you find and stay in touch with schoolmates, family, and people from your town and village. This policy explains what information we collect, why, who we share it with, and the choices and rights you have. It applies to the Compound Unite website (compoundunite.com) and the Compound Unite app for Android.
1. Who we are
Compound Unite is run by LIVENSTARTECH ENTERPRISES, a business name registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission of Nigeria, at Km 24 Onitsha-Owerri Road, Eziora, Ozubulu, Ekwusigo LGA, Anambra State, Nigeria. We are the data controller for your information.
Contact us about privacy at hello@compoundunite.com.
2. Information we collect
Information you give us
- Account: your name, email address and/or phone number, and your password (stored only in scrambled form). If you use a passkey, fingerprint or face sign-in, your device keeps the biometric; we only store a public key.
- Sign in with Google (optional): if you choose "Continue with Google", Google shares your name, email address and profile picture with us. We never see your Google password, and we don't get access to your Gmail, contacts or other Google data. You can remove Compound Unite's access at any time in your Google Account settings.
- Profile: profile, cover and background pictures, bio, birthday, schools and years, workplaces, places you have lived, hometown, village, kindred and LGA, trade and skills, favourite movies and music, the country you live in and languages you speak.
- Ethnic group (optional): only saved if you tick the box to show it and join its community. You can remove it at any time in Edit profile.
- Content you share: posts, comments, status updates, photos, videos, job adverts and applications, shop listings, pages, reactions, and fundraiser messages.
- Messages and calls: private and group chat messages, voice notes and photos you send, and records of calls.
- Group meetings: which meetings you join, your name as shown in the meeting, and meeting chat. Your live video and audio pass through our video provider to other participants. If a host records a meeting, everyone in it is told, and the recording is saved for members of that group.
- Phone number: used to verify your account, send you codes and (if you allow it) chat alerts by SMS, and, if you turn it on, let people who already have your number find you.
- Payments: when you give to a fundraiser or pay for a service, the payment is handled by Paystack. We receive the amount, date and a reference, but never your full card details. If you receive payouts, we store the bank name, account number and account name you give us.
- Identity verification (optional): if you ask to be verified, the ID document and details you submit.
- Lost-device protection (optional): the name, IMEI or serial number of devices you register, and, only if you turn tracking on, the location of that device when Compound Unite is opened on it.
Information collected automatically
- When you were last active (to show "online" and "last seen"), read receipts, and basic technical information such as device type, browser and app version, used to keep the service working and secure.
- Compound Unite administrators can see when members were last active, including members who have chosen to hide this from other members. This is used only for safety, moderation and fraud prevention, and is never shown to other members.
- A notification token for your phone or browser, if you turn on notifications.
3. How we use your information
- To run Compound Unite: show your profile and posts, deliver messages, calls and meetings, and send notifications you have allowed.
- To suggest people you may know, based on shared schools, workplaces, hometowns, family names, birthdays and interests. Your ethnic group is never used for suggestions.
- To keep members safe: check public content for scams, threats and other breaches of our Community Rules, handle reports, and act against abuse.
- To process payments, payouts, fundraisers and airtime rewards.
- To contact you about your account, security, and important changes.
We use your information because it is needed to provide the service you signed up for, because you have given consent (for example, for optional profile details, SMS alerts, or device location), because we have a legitimate interest in keeping the service safe, or because the law requires it.
4. Automated safety checks and AI
- New public posts, comments, status updates, job adverts and profile details (including pictures) may be checked automatically, including by an AI service provided by Anthropic, to spot scams, threats and other rule-breaking. Serious cases may be hidden until our team reviews them, and you can contact us if you think a decision was wrong.
- Your private and group chats are never scanned.
- Some pages on Compound Unite, such as the daily newspaper review, are written by AI and are clearly labelled "AI".
5. Deleted messages
- Delete for me hides a message or chat from your own view only. Other people in the chat still see it.
- Delete for everyone removes the message from the chat for everyone. To protect members from abuse and fraud, a private copy is kept for up to 12 months. Only Compound Unite administrators can see it, and they may review it or restore it to the chat, for example to investigate a report or settle a dispute. After 12 months it is permanently erased.
6. Who can see your information
- Other members: your name and profile picture, and anything you post publicly. Private details are shown according to your privacy settings. Group messages and meetings are visible to members of that group.
- Our service providers, who process data on our behalf and only as we instruct:
Provider What they do Supabase Database, file storage and sign-in Google "Continue with Google" sign-in (only if you choose it) Netlify Website hosting LiveKit Live video and voice for group meetings, and meeting recordings Paystack Card and bank payments VTpass Sending airtime rewards (your phone number and amount) Brevo Email alerts and codes Termii SMS codes and alerts Google Firebase Notifications on Android Anthropic AI safety checks of public content, and AI-written pages - Legal reasons: we may share information if the law requires it, or to protect someone's safety, prevent fraud, or defend our legal rights.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with advertisers. Sponsored posts on Compound Unite are placed by members and are not targeted using your private information.
7. Where your information is stored
Some of our providers store or process data outside Nigeria, for example in the European Union and the United States. Where this happens, we rely on the safeguards required by the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.
8. How long we keep information
- We keep your information while your account is open.
- When you delete your account, your profile, posts, comments, messages you sent, photos and most other data are deleted straight away. Groups you created stay for the other members, and messages other people sent you remain in their own chats.
- Records of donations you made to fundraisers are kept for the fundraiser's accounts, without your name. Paystack keeps its own payment records as the law requires.
- Copies of messages deleted for everyone are kept for up to 12 months, as explained above.
- Data may remain in secure backups for a short time before those backups are overwritten.
9. Your rights
Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 you have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you;
- correct information that is wrong (most of it you can edit yourself in Edit profile);
- delete your account and personal information (see Delete your account);
- withdraw consent you have given, such as for your ethnic group, SMS alerts or device location;
- object to certain uses of your information, and ask for your information in a portable format.
To use any of these rights, email hello@compoundunite.com from the email address on your account, or tell us the phone number you signed up with. We will reply within 30 days. If you are not satisfied, you can complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC).
10. Security
We use encrypted connections (HTTPS), scrambled passwords, access controls that limit who can see each piece of information, and optional chat locks and passkeys. No system is perfectly secure, so please keep your password and one-time codes private. Compound Unite will never ask for your PIN, OTP or card details in a message.
11. Age limit
Compound Unite is for people aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has created an account, please tell us and we will remove it.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Compound Unite changes. We will post the new version here with a new effective date, and tell you in the app about important changes.
